Reading water across borders
Three numbers make hot springs comparable anywhere: temperature at the source, pH, and total mineralisation. Kusatsu in Japan is fiercely acidic at pH 2.1; Devin in the Rhodopes is alkaline at 9.56 with almost nothing dissolved in it; Mihalkovo carries nearly 2 900 mg/L and a kilogram of carbon dioxide per cubic metre. Same planet, same plumbing, wildly different water.
